I started my business offering typing services, advertised in the local paper three months, became busy and started getting new clients through word of mouth.
One client was Crawford & Company, a nation-wide insurance adjusting firm that investigates claims within virtually every field and industry. The Brentwood office had about 40 adjusters and 12 nurse case managers. I handled all their correspondence.
Adjusters interviewed witnesses and dictated detailed reports about claims progress to account managers. Reports could run 40 pages. Nurses accompanied injured workers to doctor appointments and dictated detailed reports. I would get 12 to 30 tapes per day. I would type them over night and deliver on paper the next day. Typing sessions could be 12 hours to get everything completed. (Except for recorded interviews, reports were fixed on the fly, meaning grammatical errors, subject-verb agreement, tenses, etc. were corrected.) Five days per week.
